Have your say on funding for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

Overview

West Northamptonshire Council Children and Young People’s Services are looking to gather feedback on peoples’ thoughts on how those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are funded. We are also keen to explore the level of understanding around SEND funding.

Background

The council supports children and young people up to the age of 25 that have SEND. Education settings (early years settings, mainstream schools, SEND units within mainstream schools and further education settings) are provided with funding to provide additional support, based on the complexity of the needs of children and young people with SEND. For those up to the age of 18 this is irrespective of whether they have an Education, Health Care Plan or not, and those over 19 are only funded if there is an Education, Health Care Plan in place.

We want to ensure that funding for those in all education settings with SEND is fairly and transparently allocated and are seeking views on the arrangements including the methodology.

Local authorities must ensure that children and young people, their parents/carers and their education settings are involved in discussions and decisions about their individual support and local provision. West Northamptonshire Council has been working with partners to help to review the way that we provide funding for those with SEND across all education settings. The feedback from this engagement will feed into this work.

What happens next?

The outcome of the consultation will be used as insight to help identify opportunities to develop the service and improve communication and training around this area.

We are seeking the views of parents, carers, young people, representatives of education settings, related forums, members of the public, and any other interested parties.
