Polling District and Polling Place Review 2024

Closes 5 Jan 2025

Opened 15 Nov 2024

Overview

We are carrying out a review of polling districts and polling places that are used across West Northamptonshire.

All local authorities must undertake a review of all polling districts and polling places used for election purposes every five years.

What are polling districts and places?

A polling district is a geographical area which is used for election purposes only. All people that live in a certain polling district all go to the same building called a polling place to give or cast their votes at a polling station.

The purpose of the review

The review will take into account the new ward boundaries that come into effect for the Local Government and parish Elections being held on 1 May 2025.

The main purpose of the review is to help make sure that polling places suit the needs of those coming to vote, as far as reasonable, including making sure that polling places are accessible and meet the needs of people with disabilities.

We also need to ensure that the new wards are subdivided into smaller voting areas called polling districts and that there is a polling station allocated to each of those polling districts. Some polling districts, particularly in large villages or towns, may share a polling station with other polling districts.

We are keen to hear your suggestions and feedback on the current arrangements and proposals for future arrangements. All proposals and reasons for making changes where applicable can be found within the below Notice of Review (see Related Documentation).

Providing your views

We welcome comments from residents, community groups, councillors, MPs, political parties, parish councils, polling station booking agents, current and former polling station staff, any individuals with disabilities or groups representing disabled people within West Northamptonshire.

Following the consultation, the Council has to consider the responses and decide on the most appropriate polling districts and polling places. The final recommendations will be decided by the Democracy and Standards Committee on 23 January 2025. If the review means there are changes to polling districts, the electoral register will be updated on 1 February 2025.
