Abington Active Travel Scheme – Phase 3 Consultation

Closes 18 Jan 2026

Opened 28 Nov 2025

Overview

We would like your feedback on the Abington Active Travel Scheme – Phase 3. Our proposals focus primarily on improving walking, cycling, and wheeling routes along Abington Park Crescent and King Edward Road.

During the Spring 2023 consultation, residents provided valuable feedback on the Abington Active Travel Scheme, which helped shape the final designs for Phase 1, A5095 Park Avenue South, Billing Road, Rushmere Road junction which was upgraded and completed in December 2024.

The consultation also helped shape the final design for Phase 2, which will see footpath and cycle lane upgrades along A5095 Park Avenue South and Bridgewater Drive. This work will commence in early 2026.

The consultation also highlighted concerns about safety at the King Edward Road eastern junction.

More information on previous phases

Phase 1: Improvements at the junction of the A5095 Park Avenue South, Billing Road, Rushmere Road were completed in December 2024.

Phase 2: We asked for your views on proposals for the A5095 Park Avenue South and Bridgewater Drive. Your feedback shaped the final design, work commences early 2026.

You can read more about Phase 1 and Phase 2 in the Abington Travel Scheme report 2023 (PDF,469KB), which opens as a new window.

The Abington Active Travel Scheme will support the following objectives.

  • The upcoming Northampton’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (NLCWIP). We recently asked residents and stakeholders for their views on the draft NLCWIP and are now reviewing the feedback.
  • Delivery of the key objectives of the draft West Northants Active Travel Strategy, will be undergoing its own separate consultation this year.

Our proposals:

We have revised and updated the Phase 3 designs based on your comments, please see the overall plan image below.

We are now inviting you to share your feedback on these updated proposals.

Our proposals will affect:

A5095 Park Avenue South, King Edward Road, Abington Park Crescent junction

The design has been updated based on the stakeholders’ feedback from previous consultation raising concerns about the safety at this junction. We are suggesting the following proposals:

  • Close the eastern end of King Edward Road at its junction with the A5095 Park Avenue South. This would remove the West to East link to Abington Park Crescent and remove any turning movements in and out of the eastern side of King Edward Road.

  • Change the junction of Abington Park Crescent and the A5095 Park Avenue South into a one-way out westbound. Travelling from Landcross Drive, traffic would only exit onto the A5095 Park Avenue South.

  • Upgraded Toucan crossing on the A5095 Park Avenue South.  This will allow both cyclists and pedestrians to safely cross the A5095 Park Avenue South at the same time. This will protect cyclists as they will be kept separate from vehicles.

Abington Park Crescent, between A5095 Park Avenue South and Wellingborough Road.

We suggest the following approach:

  • Between the A5095 Park Avenue South and Bridgewater Drive - Full segregation and enhanced facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. This means that a footway separate from the cycleway will be dedicated to pedestrians and cyclists.

  • Landcross Drive to the A5095 Park Avenue South - The road will be slightly narrowed, and parking next to Abington Park will be better arranged.

  • Landcross Drive to Bridgewater Drive – The scheme may encroach slightly into Abington Park to add one cycle lane in each direction, any appropriate street furniture e.g. signs highlighting the Abington Park’s importance, and extra cycle parking.

  • Bridgewater Drive to Wellingborough Road: Abington Park Crescent may be slightly narrowed to create a safer clearance between cyclists and the historic railings inside Abington Park.
