Have your say on the draft Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment
Overview
West Northamptonshire Health and Wellbeing Board have produced a draft Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment report. We are now seeking feedback before we finalise it.
What is a Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment?
The Council and its public health and wellbeing boards have a legal requirement to look at local needs and identify gaps in pharmaceutical services and produce an evidence base and statement of need called a pharmaceutical needs assessment (PNA).
Once developed and adopted it is then used by:
- NHS England, to guide decisions on new or improved pharmaceutical services and the commissioning of NHS funded services that local community pharmacies offer,
- The Council and clinical Commissioning Groups when planning services to meet the health needs of the local communities in West Northants.
This consultation mainly focuses on technical aspects, and therefore we particularly want to hear from those providing pharmaceutical services, however we also invite and encourage everyone to have their say too.
Background
Last year we completed a review about local pharmacy services in Northamptonshire, asking people how they felt about them. The information we’ve gathered has helped us to identify what services people need and what may need improving, allowing us to use this information to shape a new Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment.
What are pharmacy services?
A pharmacy, also known as a chemist, is a place you would go to:
- To collect a prescription
- To buy medicines
- To talk to a pharmacist for advice about your illnesses or medication
We do not mean any pharmacy in a hospital, or somewhere you shop to buy anything other than medicine, for example, beauty products.
View the Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment Draft, this and some frequently asked questions can also be found at the bottom of this page.
We now want to gather feedback on this final draft before it is finally adopted, in brief we would like to know if the document is clear and accurately reflects the needs and views that have been identified through our earlier engagement.
How to give your views
Due to the nature of this consultation, this survey is aimed at pharmacies, partners and other key stakeholders, but we also welcome feedback from residents. If you would like to be involved in this final part of the process you can complete the online survey: Take me to the survey
If you have any questions or require the survey in a different format, please contact ph.healthprotection@westnorthants.gov.uk
This survey closes at midnight on Thursday 1 May 2025.
For information about how your responses are managed please see the West Northamptonshire consultation and engagement privacy notice.
What happens next?
The results of the consultation will be analysed and considered against the current draft assessment before making final amendments. After this it will be presented at the West Northamptonshire Health and Wellbeing Board where a recommendation will be made for its adoption and implementation.
Thank you for helping us by completing this consultation.
